Citrus Mittens

Project details here on Ravelry.

These came out much better than I anticipated for a first Fair Isle/colorwork/stranded knitting project. I deliberately used some leftover sock yarn I had hanging around in case it all went to pot. lolol I think my thinking with these two colors together was some sort of 'pink grapefruit' theme but it came out rather more Lilly P., eh?
Anyhoo. Back to the Fair Isle. Small bit of puckering here and there with the stitching but nothing too bad (or at least *I* don't think it's bad). I did give them a good washie-washie to help with that (which it did) but further washes might flatten them out a bit more too.
The hardest part was the !$!$!@#!@#! thumb. Oh, the thumbs were tricksy! I'm not new to putting on thumbs but having to work with two colors, with the floats from the palm getting in the way, making sure the new floats I were doing weren't too long for such a small space, and making it neat enough and tight enough so there were no annoying holes around the base? MURDER. Thankfully you just have to grit your teeth and swear like a sailor through the first few rows and then it's pretty easy from that point on. (I do like that there are stripes on one side - very nice bit of detailing.)

The pattern, from KrisKnits, is very concise and the charts are wonderful. Well worth buying. The only thing missing, I would say, is perhaps some advice on how to make a shorter pair of mittens, if you wanted. These are a little too long for me but they're going in the gifting box so that's okay. But if I had wanted to make them a little shorter, I'm not sure the best way that would be accomplished. Could make a shorter cuff, but then, you know, you have a shorter cuff. And taking a bit off the top takes away from the pattern so..........Might take a bit of thinking, that.

Speaking of the cuff. These have a sewn in ribbed cuff on the inside to make them extra snuggly and warm.  I have visions of many, many colorworked mittens in my future now that I've tackled the scary Fair Isle beastie and know I can muddle through it. :)

Gorgeous! I would never have guessed these were your first colorwork project! I've never been keen on knitting colorwork, but I've been thinking of giving it more tries, thanks for the inspiration!
