Halloweenie Stitchies!

...ignoring the fact that I was too busy to notice it's been over a week since I last posted.........*cough*

The fall leaves are terrible this year - truly terrible. They just dry up, turn brown, and fall. Not a single tree here has a color other than "hello, I'm dead-deady-dead" brown. It's kinda sad actually. (Is this because of the late summer storms and flood of rain? I have no idea, to be honest.) Oh well. There is always next year, right?

Mmmmm! APPLES.
One thing that is not terrible are the apple trees. They got hit hard by Irene, of course, but there are still plenty of apples for the picking.

I love this place we go to nearby in Pomfret because the trees are short enough to walk up to and pick apples. (The places we always went to when I was a kid required some sort of long stick with a can/catch basket/clawed hand type of contraption for picking. It took coordination and patience, man!) We over-picked for 2 people - as usual. Twenty+ pounds! Might not sound like a lot to some but I, uhhhh, don't really bake. Cook, yes - practically every day of the week. Bake? Not so much with that. I think it was probably sometime around 2009 the last time I made a batch of cookies. I can usually put together a fairly decent apple crisp or dutch apple pie (provided I BUY pre-made crust, of course) so I just need to get around to doing that. I've been eating 2 apples a day since we went picking and I *might* just run of apples though before I actually get around to baking any. *snort*

Did anybody else fall under the spell of this booklet that was released last month?

Well, looky that! I guess I did because I managed to start AND finish a few projects from it within the last few weeks.  Gotta love a pattern that only calls for 4 different colors to work all of the projects. They just whip up lickety-split that way!

My first attempt at the Halloween piece though was...............not good. I had in mind to use some zig-zag trim I bought to use on my Death by Candy piece, as a sort of 'practice session' for figuring it out. (I am good at some things but straight up sewing is NOT one of them.)

Hmm. FAIL.

I basted the zig-zag down first so it wouldn't move around when sewing it to the rest of the place and.........it still did that. Some zig-zag areas were higher than others and the corners were so bunchy and icky it was painful. Back to the drawing board with this idea, I guess. I might have to shoot an email to Vonda to get some tips on this kind of finish. At least I was able to salvage the stitching part with some careful ripping and have enough to sew it into a tiny needle minder. So all was not lost. WHEW. :)

Very pretty Halloween stitching. Rick-rack can be so unforgiving. I've never tried the all-cotton kind. I'm thinking it might be easier to work with.

Yummm, fresh apples! And apple cake!!!

LOVE your Halloween finishes...I hadn't seen that BBD book yet, and it may just break my dry spell with the linen and threads!

I bought the book when it came out but haven't had a chance to stitch any. I love your finishes; especially the pillow with the cat. Nice job.

Wonderful finishes, I especially love the wire hangers.

Re: ricrac - I would baste, then sew to the stitching, then sew everything together. I also usually piece the backing fabric and leave a gap for turning there, rather than on the edge of the piece. Much easier to sew the gap up when you don't have the ricrac to contend with.

Oh you've made the cutest things from "Casting a Spell" -- and finished them too - wow! Great seasonal stitches!

The Autumn temperatures here today are perfect, and our leaves are just beginning to change. I hope they don't just turn brown.

I love your Halloween stitches! They are all so pretty. The frayed linen happened to me one time, and I took the whole thing apart and redid it, and it turned out just fine.

Who knew ricrac was so hard? You'd think it wouldn't slide around so much. I like Karen's idea of piecing the backing fabric. All of your finishes are beautiful!

I wonder if the leaves aren't beautiful this year because of all the flooding and constant rain. It's just too much for the trees too. lol! I haven't seen any fall changes either. Very sad. Love your BBD Halloween pieces! Love all the Halloween stuff. Bummer about the ric rac. I've never tried to use it myself. I will keep it in mind if I ever do.

Wow! That's a lot of apple picking going on up your way, Melanie! I'm glad to see the apple trees weren't affected by all that horrid weather.

LOVE all your Halloween finishes--especially the black wire you used for the hangers (may have to steal that idea some day!). Have never worked with ric-rac except to glue it on over a finished ornament so I have no advice. It always looked too tricky for me to tackle!!

Ooohhh....I love apples and apple trees! That looks like one that has been around for a while - love it!

Great finishes. So glad you were able to save your stitching. If anyone can help you, I'm sure Vonna can!

Yes....I have definitely fallen under the spell of BBD and am stitching the designs. They are so quick is great to have a "finish" so quickly after I have begun!

happy stitching...

Mmm I luv apples! Funny you mentioned years and baking cookies, I baked cookies on Friday for the first time in over 3 years they were very yummy and I ate too many of them... the reason why I don't bake anymore.

Your halloween finishes are lovely!

Very cute projects. The sewing/finishing is sometimes the hardest part. I HATE sewing on a machine.

Sew pretty ;o) I'd love to get this pattern but I can't get the box up here :o( I like your ideas of finishing into smaller pieces though.

Apples...yum! We haven't gone yet. The tress are really slow to change colors here but then again, we haven't had any real cold weather.

Send me some apples! Love them and I've been bad about eating my apple a day to keep the doctor away. Stopped by an apple stand on my way home from my weekend getaway but only bought a few honeycrisps. Yum!

Love your BBD halloweenie pieces. So sorry to hear about the ricrac mishap! sewing with trims is hard! Maybe try what KarenV said...

sounds like you have a leg up on that whole "keeping the doctor away " thing! Two apples a day should put you into next year!

I like the stitchies. They look good all together in a group like that.

Your finishing looks great!! Finishes, too--the stitching, I mean. ;) I have the BBD booklet and NEED to get stitching, man! I'm getting my big backside off this computer, I swear. So many pretty things! I read Karen's instructions for doing the ric rac finishing and ack. I *think* I understand what she said. Oh, rotten recession. I would so much rather pay somebody to do my finishing! I hope it works out for you! I don't think your Halloween piece looks so bad--surely you could tuck it here and there around the ric rac?!

Love the apple picking pics! I miss that--we always went when we were kids. Ah, memories.
